“The best way to start is by starting!”

So many times, when talking to people about CrossFit, I hear the response “This is one of those gyms where I would have to join another gym, get in shape, then join this one, right?”  This absolutely drives me nuts and couldn’t be further from the truth. The truth is, CrossFit is a pretty damn effective way to get in shape! Going to a “regular” gym and running on a treadmill and bench pressing til the cows come home is not going to make you more fit and it doesn’t translate over very well to real life. Who cares if you can bench press a small car or run 20 miles if you can’t pick up your dog food safely…and really, how often do you find yourself needing to press a small car off your chest anyway.

I think the biggest thing people are scared of is the thought of embarrassment or the fear that it’s going to be “too hard”. What you have to remember is that you are doing this for you, and there is only one way for you to get better and that is for you to suck it up and just do it! Most people that wait to start are upset once they’ve made progress that they didn’t start earlier. The great thing about CrossFit is that it is scalable and easily modified so that anyone can do it, from a 5 year old child, a 70 year old man, an elite Olympic athlete, and yes, even you.

And really, at the end of the day, you either did it or you didn’t. If you didn’t, well, maybe you will one day, but if you did, congratulations, you are now one step closer to being a healthier, fitter YOU!
